How Do You Determine the Truth?

A Bowl of Encouragement by Herb Cotton

God Speaks:

John 14:6 King James Version (KJV)

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

King James Version (KJV)

Listen to God Speak & Obey:

What is your go-to source for the truth? What do you believe? Who do you believe? These are three questions we need to examine if we want to know the truth or subscribe to the lies, and to know the difference.

John 17:17 King James Version (KJV)

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

The God of the Bible has something more to say to us about the source of truth. However, it begins and ends with our focal verse for today; John 14:6. Jesus is the truth.

Numbers 23:19 King James Version (KJV)

19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

John 8:32 King James Version (KJV)

32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Romans 3:4 King James Version (KJV)

4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

As for me, here is what I believe: “God said it, and that settles it; whether anybody else believes it or not.”

Prayer:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Father, I exalt Your name above every name on earth and in heaven.

Father, speak to hearts that are open to knowing and doing the will of God and walking in the footprints of Jesus. We offer up to You our prayers in the name of Jesus, Amen.

The Wisdom of the Proverbs:

Get the truth and never sell it; also get wisdom, discipline, and good judgment. Proverbs 23:23 (NLT)

The Encouragement of the Psalms:

Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.

Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity: Psalm 64:1-2 (KJV)

The Hope of the Old Testament:

O LORD, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee: be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble. Isaiah 33:2 (KJV)

The Gospel Message:

For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. Galatians 5:13-15 (KJV)

Observation:

If there was ever a time we needed God in our lives, we sure do need Him now. Who else can you depend on more than the Lord? Who is more faithful than the Lord? Who is more able to help you than the Lord? Who loves you more than the Lord?

The words of this gospel hymn of the church are ringing in my ears and blessing me deep down in my soul.

Refrain:

Leave it there, leave it there,

Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there;

If you trust and never doubt, He will surely bring you out—

Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

Author: Charles A. Tindley, 1916

Prayer:

Our Father in heaven, we are so grateful that You are God, and that there is no one like You.

Father, we delight to live in Your presence and have the privilege of being called the children of God.

Father, keep us close to You in these trying and difficult days. Father, help us to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, and to continue to walk in the Spirit of God all of the days of our life under the sun.

We unite our hearts together and say, Amen.

1 Samuel 3:10 (NLT)
10  And the LORD came and called as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel replied, “Speak, your servant is listening.”

God Speaks – Hear The Word of God

The Wisdom of the Proverbs:

Apply yourself to discipline and listen to words of knowledge. Proverbs 23:12 (HCSB)

The Encouragement of the Psalms:

But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress.

O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love. Psalm 59:16-17 (NLT)

The Hope of the Old Testament:

The Lord said to me, “Within a year, counting each day, all the glory of Kedar will come to an end.

Only a few of its courageous archers will survive. I, the LORD, the God of Israel, have spoken!” Isaiah 21:16-17 (NLT)

The Gospel Message:

We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners;

yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. Galatians 2:15-16 (ESV)

Observation:

Do you have something to thank the Lord for today?

Do you have some pressing need in your life that you need to take to the Lord in prayer today?

God speaks to us in our pain and suffering. Jesus cares about you.  Why not accept His loving invitation to cast all of your cares upon Him?

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. 1 Peter 5:7 (NLT)

Prayer:

Father God, we enter Your presence today in awe and wonder as we sense Your presence in our hearts. Father, we identify with your servant David when he offered this prayer to You in his Psalm of praise and thanksgiving.

O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love. Psalm 59:17 (NLT)

1 Samuel 3:10 (NLT)
10  And the LORD came and called as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel replied, “Speak, your servant is listening.”

Why What We Do With Our Heart Is Important

Text:

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

5  Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.

6  Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Observation:

Who you have in your heart is of utmost importance. Notice what Solomon, who was called the wisest of men, said about the heart.

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)

23  Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

We may trust in many things and people, but there is no thing or person that can compare with the Lord.  The reason why we can trust in the Lord is because He is trustworthy. There is no one that you can say this about without reservation. “The Lord cannot lie”. “It was impossible for God to lie”.

Titus 1:2 (KJV)

2  In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Hebrews 6:18 (KJV)

18  That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

I have no difficulty in trusting in the Lord with all my heart, seeking and doing His will, and walking in His ways. I trust Him when He speaks; I listen, and obey. I believe it is impossible for Him to lie.

John 14:6 (KJV)

6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Prayer:

Father, I am so grateful, and thankful for the open door that I have to come to Your throne room of grace and mercy.

Lord, I trust in You with my whole heart, and I submit my understanding to Your will, and Your way. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Isaiah 55:11 (KJV)
11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Who Is Right?

Text:

Matthew 26:31-35 (KJV)

31  Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

32  But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

33  Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.

34  Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

35  Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.

Observation:

With all the all information that is available in the world today, it is not surprising that the volume of information is not the most important thing. What we need is the truth.

Who is right, and who is wrong? That is the question that we need to be able to answer.

In our focal passage for today we get to see how this question plays out between Jesus, and his disciples.

Jesus said this.

Matthew 26:31 (KJV)

31  Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

Peter (speaking as the spokesmen for the disciples) said this.

Matthew 26:35 (KJV)

35  Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.

Who was right; Jesus or the disciples?

Matthew 26:56 (HCSB)

56  But all this has happened so that the prophetic Scriptures would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted Him and ran away.

Notice my friends that Jesus was right, and all of the disciples were wrong. The Word says, “Then all the disciples deserted Him and ran away.”

Who do you believe? Who do you trust; man or God? How would you answer the question Jesus posed to His disciples?

John 6:67-68 (KJV)

67  Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

68  Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Prayer:

Father, I pray that you would give each of us who belong to you the faith to run to you, and not to run from you.

Father, I pray that you would keep us faithful, and not fearful of the doubts and dangers we encounter on our journey through this dark and dangerous world. In the mighty name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Isaiah 55:11 (KJV)
11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

What Is Truth?

Text:

2 Timothy 2:15 (HCSB)

15  Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth.

Observation:

Today there will be a lot of talk in the marketplace about truth as it relates to this world. That will be settled on November 8, 2016, if the Lord tarries.

I’m reflecting over my past, considering the present, and looking forward to the future. Maybe its because my birthday is Friday.

I registered to vote when I was 18 years old. I was a freshman in college, and I was working as a volunteer getting the people in my community to register to vote. Let me share a little history with you. I am an American with a skin color that is black on the outside. Last time I was tested, my blood on the inside was red.

In Louisiana you had to pass a citizenship test to vote.  I don’t recall who organized our student group, but I was a part of a group of college students that met with some adult leadership to get out into the community, and help people to register to vote.

One of the requirements of the registration was to enter your age by years, months, and days. It was easy for me because I registered on my birthday. On September 30, 1958, I went to the registration office.  I completed the form by entering 18 years, 0 months, and 0 days. As I recall I had to read a paragraph from a document on the wall behind the counter where I completed the form. I believe the document was The Declaration of Independence.

After registering, we went knocking on doors in our community, and encouraging people to register. We helped them prepare by completing the form, and citizenship questions. We calculated the birthday by year, month, and day of the day they would go to register. We provided transportation for those who needed it.

Earlier in 1953 another battle was fought in our community. This was led by the pastor of my church. A compromise was reached by the black community, and the City officials. However, the bus drivers, who were all white, refused to comply. The agreement with the City was ruled unconstitutional because the law at that time was separate, but equal. However, separate was never equal.

Not to be denied, my pastor led The First Civil Rights Bus Boycott in the United States of America in Baton Rouge, LA. in June 1953. After much struggle, the segregation was ended.

The thing I remember about the Civil Rights Movement is how closely it was connected to the Church. I share with you a song that we sang in the church, and the community.

“Verse 1: Don’t be discouraged, when trouble’s in your life.

He’ll bear your burdens, and move all misery and strife.

Thank God we’ve…

“Refrain:

We’ve come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord;

Trusting in His Holy Word, He’s never failed me yet.

Oh, oh – -, oh – – can’t turn around – –

We’ve come this far by faith.”

Everyone has a story. Thanks for listening to a brief portion of my story.

For me, I still have faith in God. I’m still trusting in His Holy Word. And, I have come too far to turn around. As another song from my youth says, “I’m too close to heaven to turn around now”.

Luke 1:37 (HCSB)

37  For nothing will be impossible with God.”

Prayer:

Father, I praise and thank You for the life that you have given me. Lord, my times are in your hands, and there is no place I would rather be than being in Christ.

Father, I pray for my country, and I rest in the promise of your Word that you will be with your people. Father, I pray that everyone who hears this message will know the truth, and receive the truth. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

John 14:6 (HCSB)

6  Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Isaiah 55:11 (KJV)
11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

The Bible Our Reliable Source for Truth

Text:

Acts 17:11 (ESV)

11  Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

Observation:

I was talking to a friend this week, and the verse listed above came up in our conversation. Then, the next day it was the focus of an article I read in my email inbox.

As a child I learned the most profound truth that I have ever been exposed to. It is more profound than anything I learned in sixteen years of formal education, and thirty-three years in the business world.

That truth is this, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so”. Without the Bible as my compass, I would be like a ship at sea without a sail; I would be lost in this world, and the world to come.

Isaiah 55:11 (KJV)

11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)

12  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Prayer:

Father, hallowed be Your name. Father, I am so grateful for the Word of God.

Father, I am so thankful for the wisdom and the wealth that I find when I read the Bible. Father, I am so grateful for the peace and the power that I receive by obeying what You have said in Your Word.

Father, Your servant David, a man after Your own heart, says what’s in my heart about Your Word. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Psalm 119:11 (KJV)

11  Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
